The conclusion of the 2019 tournament proved controversial, with Wydad Casablanca walking off in protest at an issue with the video assistant referee (VAR) system during the second leg of their match with Esperance.

Esperance was leading the second leg 1-0 at the time, with the first match having ended in a 1-1 draw. Esperance was awarded the victory but was told by CAF that they must return their trophy and medals after its Executive Committee decided to overturn that outcome.

This decision was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ruled Wydad Casablanca had lost the second leg by abandoning the match. The final will now be played at a neutral venue, with Douala’s newly constructed Japoma Stadium due to host tie on May 29.

Morocco’s Raja Casablanca faces Zamalek of Egypt in the first semi-final, while Wydad Casablanca takes on another Egyptian side in Al-Ahly. The semi-finals are held over two legs. The Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Ground in Morocco’s capital Rabat will crowd to the final of the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup.

The match will take place on May 24. Egyptian outfit Pyramids face Guinea’s Horoya in the first semi-final, while RS Berkane and Hassania Agadir contest an all-Moroccan last-four competition. The two cities got the nod following valuation of the submitted bids taking into deliberation key services such as infrastructure, accommodation, medical amongst others, a CAF statement read.
