Champions League: Arsenal could secure place if current season is voided thanks to Unai Emery
Authorities have postponed games until 4 April but if
matches cannot resume on that date, clubs face a battle to fulfill the
remainder of their fixtures. One of the decisions is to void the entire
campaign and remove the season from the records, which would controversially
deny Liverpool a first league title since 1990.

If the decision was made, Arsenal could end up as one of the
biggest beneficiaries. If the season were to end with no conclusion, the
suspended league table would be voided and the teams who qualified for the
Champions League from the 2018-19 season would also do so for next term.
The top four last year was made up of Manchester City,
Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham. Arsenal finished in fifth place, which they
achieved under former head coach Unai Emery before he was sacked in November
2019. But as it stands, Manchester City will serve a two-year ban from European
football, after UEFA charged the club for breaches of financial fair play
rules.
The city has submitted its appeal to the Court of Arbitration
for Sport (CAS), but should the decision stand, UEFA's admission criteria
mean that finishing in fifth place in the Premier League this season would mean
qualification for the Champions League.
And in the improbable event of the league being voided, City's
misfortune could see Mikel Arteta's side claim a place in Europe's premier club
competition next season thanks to their campaign last year. West Ham
vice-chairman Karren Brady was one of those who called for the campaign to be
voided.
Writing in her column for The Sun, Brady said the
English football season should be declared “null and void” after the Premier
League was suspended. The Premier League confidences that an interlude of three
weeks from now will permit it to restart but that may well be dreamland.
There is no evasion the opportunity that all levels in the
EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be canceled and this season
acknowledged null and void because if the players cannot play the games can’t
go ahead, Brady wrote. Perhaps cleaning Euro 2020 could provide more time to
complete the season into the summer but that is also a giant ‘if’. What if the
league cannot be finished?
