World Rugby administrator Beaumont drove the tributes to Slemen, telling englandrugby.com: "He (Slemen) was an extraordinary rugby player and an incredible all-around athlete.

He gave such a great amount to the game in his playing days, as a club and England mentor and as an executive of the game at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby. He will be a lot of missed as somebody whose liberal soul and extraordinary physicality graced our game.

"Our contemplations are with his significant other, Eileen, and his family."

Slemen, who was taught at St Edward's College, Liverpool, made his England debut against Ireland at Twickenham in March 1976. He was a piece of the Northern Division group who beat the All Blacks 21-9 at Otley in 1979 and had a pivotal job in the game's unequivocal attempt.

Slemen's running capacity and change of pace were compelling as England finished a 23-year hang tight for Grand Slam greatness in 1980. Ten of England's Grand Slam crew visited South Africa with the Lions that late spring and Slemen began the 26-22 first Test rout in Cape Town.

Slemen later joined England set up, instructing the backs as a component of Geoff Cooke's supervisory crew, and worked at Orrell.
