British and Irish Lions captain must be aggressive to take on Springboks, says Paul O'Connell
Three-time

Owen Farrell on The Will Greenwood Podcast. Interested Rugby fans can book

Paul
O'Connell says the British and Irish Lions need a rough and angry skipper for
their 2021 visit to South Africa. O'Connell went on three Lions visits, in
2005, 2009, and 2013, captaining the 2009 visit to South Africa where they lost
the arrangement 2-1.
"When you go to South Africa, you certainly need someone confrontational because that is their DNA," explained O'Connell on The Will Greenwood Podcast
You must
have a strategy to beat South Africa, to get around them, and to attempt to deceive
them however you positively need to take them on also.
"In the scrum, in the maul - because if they begin to get on top of you in the confrontational areas, then the belief begins to grow as we saw in the World Cup final against England."
A name bandied
around in the press as a potential captain is England lock Maro Itoje. He is
yet to captain England however could follow in the strides of Martin Johnson,
who broadly skippered the Lions before he captained England - driving them to
an arrangement win against the Springboks in 1997.
"[Itoje] is certainly the type of player you want playing against South Africa," added O'Connell.
He is a
world-class competitor and a remarkable second column forward and I like
watching him play. He is continually pushing the cutoff points and I am amazed
he doesn't part with a greater number of punishments than he does.
He is
continually pushing at the rucks, around the offside line and is splendid at
falling hammers. He is a genuine delight to watch from that regard. But I don't
have the foggiest idea what he resembles in the changing area, what he
resembles as far as initiative and driving a gathering of men.
I know many
individuals feel that you need a subsequent rower or a first-line forward
captaining the side when you take on SA, yet a player like Owen Farrell has
that grating mentality too.
"He is also very experienced now in terms of taking on SH teams and beating them. He has also had that tough experience against SA in the World Cup, so he is someone who springs to mind."
