Euro Cup 2020: England Men's Squad Announced for Upcoming Uefa Nations League Games

Gareth Southgate has named a 24-man squad for England’s upcoming UEFA Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark. The selection, which is Southgate’s first since November 2019, sees three players given their maiden call-ups to the senior team.

Kalvin Phillips, who won promotion from the Championship with Leeds United this year, is included among the midfielders, as is Manchester City’s Phil Foden. 18-year-old Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is also selected. Southampton’s Danny Ings, who was the joint-second highest scorer in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign, is recalled for the first time since he made his senior debut in a victory over Lithuania five years ago.

Eric Dier and Kyle Walker are recalled having been missing from the squad since the 2019 UEFA Nations League finals in Portugal, while James Ward-Prowse uncapped since last March also returns. Southgate's side has been out of action since beating Montenegro and Kosovo last November when they secured qualification for the now-rescheduled UEFA EURO 2020.

The outbreak of COVID-19 forced March friendlies against Italy and Denmark to be canceled, as well as pre-tournament games against Romania and Austria. In June UEFA gave the green light for the Nations League to go ahead, with England looking to build on 2019's third-place finish in the inaugural year of the tournament.

The Three Lions are in group A2 of the 2020-21 competition, with Belgium – FIFA's number-one-ranked international team completing the quartet of sides playing each other home and away over three months.

The group winner will join the other table-toppers from League A in the Nations League finals, which will be held at some point in 2021. England travels to face Iceland in Reykjavik on Saturday 5 September at 5 pm BST and then head to Copenhagen to face Denmark at 7.45 pm BST on Tuesday 8 September.
