England Euro Cup: Tough Choices Dean Henderson and Phil Foden IN, Mason Greenwood and Bukayo Saka in the frame
We were supposed to be in the middle of a wonderful summer
of sport where we hoped the crowning glory would be England winning Euro 2020. The
coronavirus pandemic quickly put a stop to that forcing most sporting events
across the globe to either be canceled or postponed.

Euro 2020 has been pushed back by 12 months to 2021 due
to the need for domestic seasons to be completed. So we now have to wait
another year for Gareth Southgate’s side to take the tournament by storm. It
could even help the England squad. It gives some of the incredibly talented
youngsters the chance to stake a claim for a place in the team. Even since
the Premier League restarted last month, Mason Greenwood, Bukayo Saka,
and Phil Foden have all shown off their talent. If the Euros were this summer,
they might not have even been picked at all.
Goalkeeper
– Dean Henderson
Jordan Pickford has been the current No.1 for England and
done a pretty decent job between the sticks. His form for Everton has been
shaky at times, though, and there are safer options. Henderson has been
brilliant for Sheffield United on loan and could rival David De Gea at Manchester
United next season.

Right-back
– Trent Alexander-Arnold
No questions here about who is England’s best right-back.
Alexander-Arnold is the best in the position in the Premier League and is arguably
one of the top players in the world at the moment. The 21-year-old has 24
Premier League assists over the last two seasons and his range of passing is
something special.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Manchester United has had a brilliant
season for the Red Devils and will be a more than capable deputy.
Left-back –
Ben Chilwell
He’s been excellent for Leicester and one of the best, if
not the best, left-back in the Premier League. And at 23, he still has plenty
of time to get better. Chilwell would have been a shoo-in for the position with
England until the rise of Bukayo Saka at Arsenal.
The 18-year-old has been superb for the Gunners at
left-back, left midfield, and even on the right of a front three. Saka seems
like a special talent but finding his best position at Arsenal may determine
who gets the job next summer.
Centre-back
– Harry Maguire
Maguire was a hero for England at the 2018 World Cup and has
had a decent first season at Manchester United since his £80million move from
Leicester. There have been times when the 27-year-old has looked like he’s got
a mistake in him that will cost a goal.
He is still England’s best center-back and can be a real
leader in the defense. Man City’s John Stones is a year younger but has
suffered due to the lack of games under Pep Guardiola.
Centre-back
– Joe Gomez
Gomez has enjoyed a brilliant season in the Liverpool side
who won the Premier League. Playing alongside Virgil van Dijk has certainly
helped his development and his case to be alongside Maguire next summer is growing.
Liverpool has a better record with him playing than when he
is out of the team. There will be a tussle with Burnley's James Tarkowski and
Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori for a place in the starting line-up and it could all
depend on who plays better next season.
Defensive
midfield – Declan Rice
By far, West Ham’s best player this season, Rice has been
brilliant at both defensive midfield and center-back. He is still only 21 and
has been linked with a move away from the Hammers in the summer with Chelsea a possible
destination.
Rice will have another season to develop before the Euros
next summer, whether that will be at the London Stadium or
elsewhere. Plenty more time to cement his place in England starting
line-up. Tottenham’s Harry Winks could make a case to be included in the
discussion depending on performances next season.
Midfield –
Jordan Henderson
He’s one of the more experienced players in the England
squad with 55 caps to his name. The 30-year-old has proved himself
indispensable as Liverpool captain on their way to Champions League glory last
season and the Premier League title in 2019/20. With so many youngsters in the
conversation to break into the team shortly, Henderson’s experience could be
vital at the tournament.
Midfield –
Phil Foden
Had Euro 2020 gone ahead then Foden may well not have even
been in the squad, certainly not in contention for a starting place. Since the
Premier League restart, the 20-year-old has made some excellent performances
with four goals and two assists in six games in all competitions.
David Silva will be leaving Man City in the summer so it
opens the door for more regular football for Foden. If he carries on at his
current trajectory, then it will be hard to leave him out of the side.

Left-wing –
Raheem Sterling
England is blessed with some incredible strength in depth in
the attacking positions. Marcus Rashford, Sterling, and Callum Hudson-Odoi will
all be vying for the place on the wide left. At the moment, Sterling edges it
with his performances in recent weeks for Man City. He has scored four goals
since the restart in six appearances, including strikes against Liverpool and
Arsenal.
Right-wing
– Jadon Sancho
The 20-year-old is one of the most exciting young forward’s
in world football at the moment. He scored 17 goals and added 16 assists for
Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga this season.
There has been talking of him moving in the summer with
Manchester United touted as a possible destination. United’s own Mason
Greenwood could be vying for a place in Southgate’s team. He has netted nine
Premier League goals this season and made a big impression since the restart.
Forward –
Harry Kane
He will be the first name on the team sheet for Gareth
Southgate as England captain. Kane has a phenomenal record with England scoring
32 goals in 45 appearances, including winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World
Cup. England is blessed with in-form talent in that the position at the moment
as Danny Ings has 19 Premier League goals while Tammy Abraham has 14 this term.
